UNDERSTANDING COLOR

The basic principles of color theory and design are simple. Our color wheel starts with the 3 primary colors blue, yellow and red
these colors being your primary colors.
The next aspect to the color wheel is creating the secondary colors. or called Complementary colors, colors made by mixing two of the primary colors.

The secondary colors are:

orange  (mix red + yellow)

green   (mix yellow + blue)

violet    (mix blue + red)

Then last but certainly not least there is

Tertiary Colors: These colors are created when mixing one secondary and one primary color.

The tertiary colors are: yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue violet, blue-green, and yellow-green.
Also do not forget your neutrals, as they are often overlooked, but yet can often be the most effective in rooms and easy on the eyes.

Basics
Now I am sure that you might have noticed that red and orange really do not look very well together, however red and green look great together. A great example of course is Christmas... and here is why. Red and Green are on the opposite ends of the color wheel. Purple and orange (or golds) an so on. This is one of the most important rules in design.

A Little more advanced
I recently had a client that had bought a home that previously had been remodeled in pink. Even though the customer loved the home and it certainly suited her family, she really could have done without the pink.
My Advice... the color wheel...
Looking in decor magazines the most common color used with pink is a mint green. Opposites on the color wheel. Keeping in mind that a lighter hue of red (pink ) would call for a lighter hue of green.
If you spent some time on the internet looking at rooms in pink decor my guess is that you would find green!
The next important design tool would be a neutral. In that same pink room, depending on the style
(contempary or traditional) you would probably find bold pops of white or black.

Advanced
Green like many colors can be used as a neutral in your color pallet, depending on how much black, gray etc... is used in the color. This is a little more complicated however, important to know because this practice is often used to make a beautiful environment.
There is more on this subject in the newsletters section (click here to read more) including the affects colors have on your mood. Also keeping in mind the color wheel if you would like to use colors together like red and orange. That is fine as long as one color (let's use red) is the main in at least 60 percent of the room and orange is used in much smaller amounts. Also it is important that the orange have more red in the color than yellow.

Favorite Advice
Hands down the easiest way to choose color is finding something natural. Some designers use flowers, some food, but you will not go wrong if you use this theory. Believe it or not this is probably the most common used theory in design. Think about your favorite meal... would you eat it if it did not look appealing? Do all the colors work together? How about your favorite flower. If you are ever in doubt this theory will get you a long way.
